Guidant / Medtronic Recalls

Serious injuries and death can result when medical devices malfunction. Thousands of defective devices have been released to the public in the past, causing pain and injuries so severe that corrective surgery has been needed. Even devices that have been approved by the FDA can cause side effects and injuries that aren't discovered in the testing process.

Two companies that have released defective medical products into the marketplace in recent years are Guidant and Medtronic. In 2005, both companies recalled several models of defective pacemakers that caused at least two deaths and the need to surgically remove thousands of defective and dangerous devices from victims.

The pacemakers that Medtronic recalled have defective wiring causing a short in the batteries. It is estimated that 28,000 of Medtronic's defective units were sold worldwide. No deaths have been associated with the Medtronic recalls yet, but many have been removed from victims already. Symptoms of a defective Medtronic pacemaker include dizziness and fainting.

Guidant recalled 28,900 of its defective defibrillators in June 2005. These defects also have faulty wiring causing short circuits. At least two deaths due to short circuits have been connected to a defective Guidant defibrillator and many patients have had to have their defibrillators surgically removed as a precautionary procedure.

Replacing these faulty implants for victims is not a simple matter by any means. Thousands of patients who had them implanted are not healthy enough to undergo replacement surgery. This leaves victims and their families constantly worried what the long-term affects will be. The victims, who were lucky enough to have their defective units replaced, have been forced to undergo additional surgeries and pay for those costs until they can seek damages in a court of law.
