Erb's Palsy
Personal Injury Lawyer in Boca Raton * Ft. Lauderdale * West Palm Beach, Florida
Erb's Palsy is a form of cerebral palsy that occurs when the nerves controlling muscles in the shoulder, arm or hand are damaged during or soon after childbirth. It can affect children in many different ways, causing paralysis and numbness of the muscles associated with the damaged nerve. The degree of symptoms depends on which nerves were damaged and the severity of that damage.
There are four types of nerve injuries that can cause Erb's Palsy:
- Avulsion – when the nerve is torn away from the spine
- Rupture – when the nerve is torn, but not at the location it's attached to the spine
- Neuroma – when scar tissue around a damaged nerve puts pressure on it, limiting its ability to send signals to the muscles
- Praxis – when the nerve has been damaged, but not torn. In these cases, Erb's palsy can heal on its own.
If your child suffers from Erb's Palsy, you will need an experienced lawyer like Brian J. Glick to investigate whether medical malpractice was the cause. If so, you are entitled to damages that will reimburse you for the extensive medical expenses you have incurred and pain and suffering you have endured.
