Choosing a Personal Injury Lawyer

If you are ever in need of a personal injury lawyer, choosing one that is right for you is of the utmost importance. Not all are created equally, nor do they all practice the exact same kind of injury law. However, finding the right kind of personal injury lawyer shouldn’t be a difficult choice if you consider the following questions:
  • Is the attorney licensed to practice in the jurisdiction or state where the injury occurred?
  • Does the attorney have an intimate understanding of the laws of that state?
  • Does the attorney have an AV rating in the Martindale-Hubbell publication?
  • Is the attorney a member of the American Association of Justice (formerly the American Trial Lawyers Association)?

After you have determined your choice for a personal injury lawyer, the next questions to find answers to are:
  • What kind of experienced does the attorney have with claims like yours?
  • What is your attorney’s success rate in cases that are similar to yours?
  • Does your attorney have past client references, and are they willing to share this information?

Finally, you should consider:
  • Is there a 24-hour contact available in case of an emergency?
  • Is there a number you can reach your attorney before or after business hours?
  • How quickly does your attorney or someone from their staff typically return calls?

Remember that the best way to find a personal injury lawyer who will best represent you is to ask these questions and anything else that is relevant to your case. There are many other things that you may think of to ask during your initial claim evaluation.

Some Statistics about Motorcycle Accidents

The fact is the rate of motorcycle accidents is increasing. Several factors come into why this is occurring, but due to this, statistical information will certainly show an increase in injuries and deaths due to injuries sustained in motorcycle accidents throughout the year. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (2006) show:
  • 4,810 accident-related fatalities
  • Roughly 88,000 accident-related injuries
  • Fatality rate is 72%
  • Motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to die than occupants of passenger cars
  • Motorcyclists are eight times more likely to suffer injuries that occupants of passenger cars
  • 51% of all motorcycles involved in fatal accidents were involved with another vehicle
  • 25% of those involved in fatal accidents were not driving with a valid license

Furthermore, most of those injured or killed suffered head injuries. And the economic cost is staggering: $150 billion a year is lost due to these kinds of accidents. These are awe-inspiring statistics for a vehicle that makes up only three percent of all the vehicles on the road.

Rise in Motorcycle Accidents

Perhaps you have noticed the number of motorcycles has increased on the roads lately. A couple of obvious reasons for this are that the weather has warmed up, and those with motorcycles are back on the roads after winter weather. Another reason is that rising gas prices have convinced many people that a motorcycle is a better choice than an SUV. Add to this that riding a motorcycle is a trendy thing to do, and the numbers increase even further. And with this increase in riders on the road, the number of motorcycle accidents has increased, too.

Many things cause motorcycle accidents, but some of the reasons that accidents are on the rise is that there are more inexperienced riders on the road. Just because it seems like a good idea to trade in your car or truck for a motorcycle does not mean that you can drive one like another type of vehicle. Take safety and training courses before you ride.

Florida is a destination for many tourists. This means that there will simply be more people on the roads. Motorcycles are small and fast, and are not necessarily going to be seen by a car that is trying to turn. Many riders are killed because the driver of the automobile simply didn’t see them coming.

Add to this the prevalence of riders under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and you have a very lethal combination of factors that lead to devastating accidents.

If you are going to ride a motorcycle, take the time to learn to drive it properly. And wear a helmet. Despite the fact that helmets save lives, many motorcyclists ignore this. Most of those killed in motorcycle accidents die from traumatic head and brain injuries. In Florida, wearing a helmet is not required for those over 21 if they have a minimum of $10,000 in medical insurance.

If you have been in a motorcycle accident, please contact us to set up an initial consultation.
