Some Statistics about Motorcycle Accidents

The fact is the rate of motorcycle accidents is increasing. Several factors come into why this is occurring, but due to this, statistical information will certainly show an increase in injuries and deaths due to injuries sustained in motorcycle accidents throughout the year. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (2006) show:
  • 4,810 accident-related fatalities
  • Roughly 88,000 accident-related injuries
  • Fatality rate is 72%
  • Motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to die than occupants of passenger cars
  • Motorcyclists are eight times more likely to suffer injuries that occupants of passenger cars
  • 51% of all motorcycles involved in fatal accidents were involved with another vehicle
  • 25% of those involved in fatal accidents were not driving with a valid license

Furthermore, most of those injured or killed suffered head injuries. And the economic cost is staggering: $150 billion a year is lost due to these kinds of accidents. These are awe-inspiring statistics for a vehicle that makes up only three percent of all the vehicles on the road.
